Lauderdale Lakes vehicle burglar steals gun, police equipment

Detectives try to ID crook caught on camera rummaging through taxi

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are trying to identify a burglar who broke into several vehicles, including a police officer's sport utility vehicle, in Lauderdale Lakes.

The burglaries were reported April 24 at a Lauderdale Lakes apartment complex.

BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said the thief smashed his way inside a taxicab that was parked outside. Video from a rear-view camera captured the crook as he rummaged through the car in search of valuables.

The same thief is suspected of breaking into two other vehicles that same morning, including a North Miami police officer's marked Chevrolet Tahoe. Oglesby said the burglar took a vest carrier with "police" patches and $143 worth of LED flares.

He is also believed to have stolen a gun with two magazines from a Dodge Charger.

The culprit is considered armed and dangerous since he has police equipment and a loaded gun.

Anyone who recognizes the crook is asked to call BSO detectives at 954-321-4800 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
