SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. – A 27-year-old man is being hailed a hero after saving a woman from drowning Thursday night in Sunny Isles Beach while he was dining with his wife and young child at the Newport Pier.

According to Sunny Isles Beach police, Rose Cireus, 19, got into the water near the fishing pier about 7:30 p.m. when she saw that her 23-year-old sister was in distress.

Police said Cireus was able to push her sister to shallow water, but got pulled back out by strong currents.

Police said Cireus began going under water while screaming for help.

Javier Fernandez, who was eating dinner with his family at the Beach Bar on the pier, jumped into the water and rescued Cireus from the strong current, police said.

"If it was not for that guy (Fernandez), I would have died," Cireus told police who interviewed her at Aventura Hospital.

Police said Cireus and Fernandez do not know each other.
