3 killed in crash in northwest Miami-Dade County

Drivers of cars involved injured, taken to nearby hospitals

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade Police Department said three people were killed Sunday night in a crash on Northwest 17th Avenue near Northwest 119th Street.

According to investigators, a Toyota Corolla traveling south on Northwest 17th Avenue was attempting to make a left turn onto Northwest 119th Street when it was struck by a Chevrolet Impala about 9:40 p.m.

The driver of the Chevrolet Impala, Shakeena Hasty, 32, and the driver of the Toyota Corolla, Paul Manreza, 55, were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Hasty, who is believed to have caused the crash, was being treated at North Shore Medical Center. Manreza was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Two males and one female in the Corolla died at the scene.

Mariza Castro told Local 10 News that her husband, Ramon Castro, was among those killed in the crash.

"We're devastated," Mariza Castro said. "My daughter came with my car and she says, 'Mom, there's a terrible accident at the corner.'"

"I was calling my husband several times and he didn't answer, so I told my daughter, 'let's go over there.'"

Castro said her cousin Manreza, who was driving the Corrolla, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her nephew, Antonio Castro, and his girlfriend were also killed in the crash, Mariza Castro said.

The family said they are still deciding whether to bury their loved ones in their native Honduras or in South Florida.

Detectives said speed might have been a contributing factor to the crash. It's unclear whether any charges will be filed.
