2 arrested after police pursuit ends in Plantation crash

2 taken to area hospital

PLANTATION, Fla. – Steve Hurtig turned on his TV Monday afternoon to see his car, a black Mercedes-Benz, on fire.

The vehicle was stolen Saturday when Hurtig and his wife  were returning to their Hollywood condo after celebrating their anniversary.

"Next thing I know on my wife's side the door was ripped open," Hurtig said, adding that three people were involved in the carjacking. "He grabbed a hold of my wife, pulled her out of the car and put a gun to her head."

Police  were able to track down the vehicle on Monday.

The driver, Isiah Rashad Moore, 16,  led Fort Lauderdale police on a chase that ended when he crashed into another vehicle on Broward Boulevard. Hurtig's Mercedes caught on fire as a result.

Moore and a passenger, Cahlil Santana Smith, 16, ran away after the crash, which happened on Northwest 70th Street and Broward Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale police Spokesman Keven Dupree said. The pair were arrested shortly thereafter, and at least one firearm was recovered following a search.

Moore and the occupant of the vehicle that was struck were taken to an area hospital to be evaluated,  Dupree said.

Both had minor injuries, according to firefighters.

Smith  was arrested on charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle, resisting without violence and leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury.

Moore was arrested on the same charges as Smith, along with obstruction of justice, aggravated fleeing and eluding with injury and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
