Former Miami-Dade mayor's car vandalized weeks before ex broke into home, report says

Security guard finds Carlos Alvarez's Audi with smashed window, scratches, dents

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez's expensive car was vandalized earlier this month, weeks before his ex-girlfriend was arrested for breaking into his apartment, Coral Gables police said.

According to an incident report, a security guard at Alvarez's high-rise on Merrick Way notified police July 3 after he saw that Alvarez's black Audi S4 had a broken rear windshield and several scratches and dents on the passenger side.

Police said nothing inside the car appeared to be tampered with, and a case card was left on the vehicle and with the security guard when officers were unable to contact Alvarez.

No arrests were made in the case.

Alvarez's ex-girlfriend, Miami-Dade police Lt. Evelyn Fernandez was arrested Sunday morning after she allegedly broke into the former mayor's home.

Police said Fernandez caused about $5,000 worth of damage inside the apartment, ruining rugs, an entertainment center and other items.

Fernandez faces charges of burglary to an unoccupied structure and criminal mischief. She was granted pretrial release and a Miami-Dade County judge ordered that she stay away from her ex.

Police have not said whether Fernandez is suspected of vandalizing Alvarez's car.
