Shooting at Miami Gardens gas station leaves 1 dead

Police say Emanuel Hilton fatally shot Jared Simmons-Smith after fight

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A 23-year-old man was shot and killed inside a Miami Gardens gas station Saturday morning after a fight with a customer, police said.

The fatal shooting happened about 12:45 a.m. at an Exxon gas station in the 16800 block of Northwest 27th Avenue.

Jared Simmons-Smith, 23, was inside the gas station when he got into a fight with Emanuel Hilton, 23, Miami Gardens spokeswoman Petula Burks said. 

Simmons-Smith pushed Hilton out of the store during the fight, Burks said. 

Hilton later returned to the gas station and shot Simmons-Smith once, Burks said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Hilton surrendered to Miami Gardens police and was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.
