Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said the officer tried to pull the driver over, but Strachan accelerated and began to weave in and out of traffic. The officer did not chase the car, but alerted other officers over the radio about the driver.

Andrew Hamilton, 27, was soon found dead in the street near Collins Avenue at 11th Street.

Witnesses estimated that Strachan was driving between 70 to 100 mph down Collins Avenue when he struck Hamilton in a crosswalk.

Hamilton was propelled about 230 feet from the point of impact and was killed instantly, Rodriguez said.

Police said Strachan stopped the car after the crash and ran away, never attempting to check on Hamilton.

Strachan was arrested Saturday at an apartment in Marietta, Georgia, by U.S. marshals and members of the Cobb County Sheriff's Department.

U.S. Marshal Barry Golden said Strachan had two other warrants out for his arrest -- one in California and one in New Jersey for charges of fraud and identity theft.

He said Strachan tried to escape from authorities by jumping out of a second-floor window.

Strachan is currently being held in jail in Georgia, while he awaits extradition to Miami.
