Armed men ambush 4 people during spiritual counseling in Pompano Beach

Man beaten during robbery, deputies say

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Four people were ambushed last month by armed robbers during a spiritual counseling at an apartment in Pompano Beach, authorities said.

The home invasion was reported July 16 in the 700 block of Southwest Ninth Street.

Broward sheriff’s deputies said Miguel Leyva, 26, and his wife, Ehilta Borjas, 23, were receiving spiritual counseling at the home of Vladimir Garcia, 37, and Yenisel Laguna, 21.

During their session they heard a knock on the door, and Leyva opened the door only to be ambushed by two armed men, deputies said.

Authorities said the masked robbers pushed their way inside and forced everyone to the ground.

After discovering that there was a surveillance camera inside the home, the robbers disconnected it and then tied up the victims using wires and items found around the home, deputies said.

Deputies said the men ransacked the home and struck Garcia multiple times in the face and back when he hesitated after they had demanded money from him.

Authorities believe the men were inside the home for about 30 minutes, leaving with cash, jewelry, computer equipment and the keys to Garcia’s car and home.

Surveillance video shows the robbers leaving in a white SUV.

Anyone with information about the home invasion is asked to call Detective Victor Carrasquillo at 954-321-4208 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
