Tampa man dies while diving at Alligator Reef off Islamorada

Antonio Ramirez, 41, barely breathing when pulled from water, deputies say

ISLAMORADA, Fla. – A Tampa man died Tuesday after diving at Alligator Reef off Islamorada, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Herrin said Antonio Ramirez, 41, was diving with family and friends about 1:30 p.m. in about 60 feet of water.

She said Ramirez and his son became distressed and quickly surfaced.

Ramirez was barely breathing when he was pulled from the water, and people on the boat began CPR while others called 911 for help.

Herrin said the boat was driven to Fiesta Key, where the group was met by paramedics.

Ramirez was taken to Fishermen's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.
