Jose Pena-Lopez is accused of accidentally shooting his friend in the face and then dumping the gun into a canal.

HIALEAH, Fla. – A Miami teenager is in jail after he shot his friend in the face and then threw the gun into a canal, police said.

Jose Pena-Lopez, 19, was arrested after Friday morning's incident. He faces charges of culpable negligence and tampering with evidence.

Hialeah police Sgt. Carl Zogby said the shooting occurred about 1:45 a.m. on the side of Okeechobee Road.

According to an arrest report, Pena-Lopez was sitting in his vehicle playing with a gun and waving it around outside the window when it "accidentally discharged," striking friend Javier Enrique Pupo Hernandez in the face.

Pena-Lopez told police that he panicked and fled the scene, stopping his vehicle to throw the gun into a canal before returning home, the report said.

Zogby said the 23-year-old victim was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and was in stable condition.
