73-year-old woman shot in face after visiting friend at Century Village in Deerfield Beach

Victim drives herself to Delray Medical Center, police say

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – A 73-year-old woman drove herself to a hospital Wednesday night after she was shot in the face, authorities said.

Boca Raton police said officers were at a traffic stop in the 2000 block of West Glades Road, when an elderly couple pulled up in a car and told the officers that they had just witnessed a shooting at the intersection of Powerline Road and Glades Road.

Police called nearby hospitals to check for possible victims and discovered that the victim had driven herself to Delray Medical Center.

According to detectives, the woman left her friend's apartment at Century Village in Deerfield Beach about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

She said she turned from Hillsboro Boulevard onto Powerline Road, when she noticed a silver Nissan driving alongside her vehicle.

The victim continued driving north and stopped at a red light at the intersection of Glades Road and Powerline Road.

The vehicle, occupied by four men, pulled up next to her in the adjacent lane, and one man got out of the car and tried to open her door by pulling on the handle and pounding on the window, police said.

The woman told detectives that the man pulled out a handgun and fired one shot into her car.

Police said the woman shielded her face when she saw the gun, and the bullet went through her hand and into her cheek.

She drove off, and the men continued to follow her for a short time, police said.

Police said one more shot was fired at the victim's car before the men headed east on Yamato Road.

The victim drove herself to Delray Medical Center. She remains in stable condition.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Tim Kurdys at 561-338-1377 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 800-458-TIPS.
