Spinner dolphins get stranded off Florida Keys

Hurricane force pushes dolphins to shallow waters

FLORIDA KEYS – Several spinner dolphins showing signs of dehydration were stranded in shallow waters off the Florida Keys on Saturday, according to rescuers.

The Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder team found four dolphins north of Islamorada and another just off Matecumbe Key.

After rescuers returned to Key Largo with the first four marine mammals, they received subsequent reports of several other spinner dolphins in the area.

The force of Hurricane Hermine was to blame, according to DPMMR president Art Cooper.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the National Park Service and Monroe County Sheriff's Office contributed to rescue efforts.
