DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A 12-year-old boy called 911 after he found a burglar inside his Dania Beach home while his parents were at work, authorities said.
According to an incident report, the boy was watching TV just after 11 a.m. July 26 when he heard a knock at the front door of his home in the area of Southeast Fourth Avenue and Fourth Street.
The boy did not open the door because of his parent's rules, but he heard someone enter the home soon afterward.
Broward sheriff's deputies said the boy saw the burglar inside his sister's room, and the man told him to "go stay in the bathroom."
The boy called 911 while he was in the bathroom and stayed on the phone with a dispatcher until help arrived.
Deputies said the man was gone by the time they arrived. A search of the area with the help of K-9 units was unsuccessful.
The family told detectives that they have lived in the home for seven years and were shocked that this happened to them.
Multiple items were stolen from the home, including two laptops, a Nexus Samsung Galaxy tablet, four U.S. passports, three Spanish passports, a passport case and a woman's Fossil watch with matching bracelet.
A glass kitchen window panel, through which the thief is believed to have entered and left, was also damaged.
The boy was not injured.
"He has to face the consequences of what he did, and you know, it's not right to come into anybody's house and do what he did," the boy's mother said. "How dare him to do that. It's not fair."
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
