GUANGZHOU, China – A wildlife preservation group is attempting to gain the release of a polar bear kept inside an enclosure inside a Chinese shopping center.
Animals Asia has taken up the cause of freeing Pizza the polar bear from the Grandview Aquarium in Guangzhou, China.
The organization is gathering signatures on its online petition that demands the closure of the aquarium.
Media outlets from around the world have dubbed Pizza "the world's saddest bear."
A wildlife park in England that has been specifically created for polar bears said they would welcome Pizza, only as long as Grandview does not replace him with another animal.
"Thanks to this incredible offer from Yorkshire Wildlife Park there can be a happy ending and the negative publicity they have suffered can yet be turned into a positive news story." said Animal Asia's Animal Welfare Director Dave Neale. "From talking to them I know they know that mistakes have been made in terms of their animal facilities and ongoing care."
