Davie police said Trotman, 20, had multiple lacerations to his neck, chest and abdomen when officers found him lying near the stairwell of his apartment. Police said Trotman told officers that Toombs stabbed him.

Trotman was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

A witness told police that she was inside Trotman's bedroom about 2:30 a.m. when Toombs began yelling, "Get the (expletive) out." She said Toombs seemed to calm down for a bit, but he began to yell again and throw things across the apartment.

The witness said Toombs entered Trotman's bedroom but left when Trotman told him to leave. She said Toombs returned, this time carrying a flashlight, and Trotman again ordered him to leave.

According to a police report, the witness heard what she thought was a "cutting" noise from outside the bedroom door, so Trotman left the bedroom to confront Toombs, and a fight ensued.

During the scuffle, Toombs used a kitchen knife to stab Trotman, the witness told police. She ran to a neighbor's apartment for help.

When she returned to the apartment, the witness found Trotman lying on the ground outside. According to the report, she used a towel to try to stop the bleeding, and while she was waiting for paramedics to arrive, Toombs yelled, "I told you I was going to kill you."

Police said Toombs admitted to stabbing Trotman.
