Woman faces charges in Parkland crash that killed her passenger

Fatal crash reported on Mother's Day

PARKLAND, Fla. – A Boca Raton woman was arrested Friday in a Mother's Day crash that killed her passenger.

Broward sheriff's deputies said Laura Haggerty, 47, was taken into custody with help from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.

According to deputies, Haggerty was driving a Ford Explorer on May 8 when she lost control of the vehicle near the 12200 block of Loxahatchee Road in Parkland.

Deputies said the SUV drifted off the road and Haggerty over-corrected, causing the vehicle to veer across the roadway and collide with the guardrail on the north side of the street.

The SUV began spinning and then rolled over.

Deputies said Haggerty's passenger, Kelly Rider, 35, wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the SUV.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Coral Springs Fire Department.

BSO detectives said Haggerty was speeding and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.25.

She faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular homicide.
