MIAMI – A Miami police trainee was injured in a crash after an early Tuesday morning chase.

The chase and crash ended near Northeast Second Street and Northeast 17th Avenue.

Miami police said officers were chasing a robbery suspect when the suspect's vehicle crashed into a police cruiser, pushing and dragging the cruiser.

The robbery suspect was driving a stolen red Mazda 6 when Sgt. Carlos Mendez spotted the vehicle parked in the 800 block of Northwest 18th Avenue, according to a police report. 

"(The) subject then accelerated his vehicle, purposely crashing into Sgt. Mendez's patrol car," police said.

Police said the suspect fled but was later taken into custody.

The rear bumper of the patrol vehicle, along with both right doors, were damaged. 

Mendez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital as a precaution. He was treated and has since been released.

The suspect's identity hasn't been released.
