Woman dead, daughter wounded; man stabbed in northwest Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A woman was shot to death and her daughter was taken to a hospital in critical condition after a domestic-related shooting and attempted suicide Wednesday night in northwest Miami-Dade County, police said.

The shooting took place just before 10 p.m. in the 2600 block of Northwest 99th Street.

Miami-Dade police Detective Marjorie Eloi said officers arrived at the home and found two women who had been shot and a man suffering from apparent stab wounds.

One of the women, identified as Yunia Gomez, 45, died at the scene.

"She was a nice lady," Robin Haymon, who knew the victim, said. "She worked at the corner store for a few years. She was down with the whole neighborhood. Everybody showed her respect and stuff."

Gomez's daughter, identified as Eryka Jimenez, 19, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

The man, identified as Jairo Ramon-Mejia, 41, was also taken to the hospital.

"She was a Christian woman," Jimenez's boss, Jenny Jean, said about Gomez. "She always, always, always asked me about my daughter, always prayed, always kept me encouraged, always thanked me for helping her daughter out, having her here and just looking out for the community. She was a very sweet lady."

According to police, Ramon-Mejia was involved in an a dispute with Gomez at their home when he pulled out a gun and shot Gomez and her daughter.

Police said Ramon-Mejia then tried to take his own life by stabbing himself repeatedly with a knife.

"We all know Jairo," Jean said. "We all know the mom there in the community, but we never knew of any domestic issues with them. Like, I'm so, I just saw her the other day. Like, it's crazy."

Authorities said Jimenez is now stable, but Ramon-Mejia's condition is unknown as he is undergoing surgery at this time.

Police said there have been two previous domestic dispute reports in the past from the same residence.
