Rape suspect briefly escapes from deputies near Fort Lauderdale, authorities say

Marchellus Vyfhuis picked up on warrant for habitually driving without license

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – An escaped suspect is back in custody Thursday after a brief manhunt near Fort Lauderdale.

A representative from the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Marchellus Vyfhuis somehow managed to get away from deputies Thursday morning in the area of Northwest 27th Avenue and 14th Street.

Deputies recaptured him shortly later.

Authorities said Vyfhuis was initially picked up on a warrant for habitually driving without a license.

Police told Local 10 News in February that Vyfhuis was also wanted in connection with a rape in Lauderhill.

According to police, three men, including Vyfhuis, picked up a woman in August 2015 and offered to give her a ride home. Instead, the men raped her before dropping her off at a Shell gas station in Lauderhill, police said.

It's unclear whether the other two men have been captured.
