Babysitter with facial tattoo of Florida faces charges in baby's death

Baby suffers massive head injuries in violent beating, autopsy reveals

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lee County Sheriff's deputies said prosecutors charged a babysitter in a beating that killed an 8-month old baby in Fort Myers.

The sheriff's office said that after finding a baby not breathing at 3 a.m., on Thanksgiving Day morning, the babysitter, 27-year-old Rafael Carrion, could not explain what happened.

Rescue took the baby from a mobile home to the Gulf Coast Hospital. The Naples Daily News reported the hospital staff pronounced the baby, Julian Valdez, dead on Thursday.

"This innocent life, lost at the hands of a monster, has affected me and my team today in a profound way," Sheriff Mike Scott said

The Medical Examiner's Office autopsy results revealed Julian suffered "massive head injuries" consistent with a "violent beating."

"I can’t find the words to adequately describe my anger and heartache," Scott said.

Carrion, who has a facial tattoo of the map of the state of Florida, was at Lee County Jail on Friday. He faced charges of second-degree murder and aggravated manslaughter.
