Sen. Bill Nelson urges Trump to continue Obama's efforts in Cuba

Senator reacts to Fidel Castro's death

MIAMI ā€“ Sen. Bill Nelson said Saturday President-elect Donald Trump should continue with President Barack Obama's efforts to promote democracy in Cuba.Ā

In a statement reacting to Fidel Castro's death, Nelson said the U.S. should continue to "press hard" against Castro's brother Raul Castro.

Trump should "continue to take steps to support the Cuban people until he provides basic rights and freedoms to all of the people of Cuba," Nelson said.

Nelson believes the new Trump administration should continue the policy of opening travel and communication with the island.Ā

Nelson has been supportive of the U.S. embargo, but after Obama moved to normalize relations with the island, he has said there would be enough votes in Congress to lift it, if there was progress in making reforms.
