According to an incident report, the victim was hanging out at the community pool with a friend when five men held him at gunpoint and demanded his backpack.
The victim refused to comply with their orders, and he was pistol-whipped in the eye, causing a cut, the report said.
Deputies said the men, who were holding guns to the victim's side and head, fled with the victim's iPhone 6 and his 18-karat gold chain.
The victim told Local 10 News that he ran after the thieves and held the front gate down to prevent the robbers from escaping.
Deputies said one of the vehicles was able to get away, but a BMW driven by one of the thieves stopped, made a U-turn and drove to the other side of the complex.
The BMW, which had blood on its hood from the victim, was found abandoned inside the complex when deputies arrived.
Detectives said they traced the vehicle to a Margate woman, who said that her son, Alexander Brown, was given permission to use her car.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
