BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Two families were homeless after two separate fires in Broward County on Friday night -- a week before Christmas. 

The Plantation Fire Department and the Broward Fire Rescue summoned The Red Cross Disaster Action Team to help them.

FAMILY IN PLANTATION

Plantation firefighters rescued family pets -- several cats, a dog and a rabbit -- during a house fire in the area of Southwest 42nd Avenue and 9th Street near the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. 

The fire started at the home's laundry room, where flames engulfed the dryer, according to Plantation Fire Rescue.

Broward Fire Rescue also responded to a house fire near the Lakes Mall in Lauderdale Lakes. 

The fire started in the kitchen and displaced six adults, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles. 

Jachles directed all inquiries for assistance to the Red Cross.
