Man accused of shooting ex-girlfriend in face denied bond

Darius Chaney, 19, faces 3 counts of attempted murder

MIAMI – A man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend in the face Tuesday, while she was walking to a bus stop in Homestead, appeared in court Wednesday morning and was ordered to be held without bond.

Darius Chaney, 19, was arrested on three counts of attempted murder.

"There is probable cause for attempted first-degree murder on counts two and three, because he pointed the gun at the other two victims," Miami-Dade County Judge Mindy Glazer said.

Police said Gennavi Small, 18, and two others were walking to the bus stop near Southwest 129th Place and Southwest 244th Street shortly before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, when she was approached by Chaney.

Police said Small told Chaney to leave, and he complied, but returned a second time and open fired at the group, striking Small in the face.

"No direct target," Small's mother, Terrella Small, said. "He just pointed the gun and (fired) multiple shots, and she got hit, and everyone took off running."

Gennavi Small is a senior at Homestead Senior High School. She was taken to Jackson South Community Hospital, where she was listed in critical but stable condition.

Police said Small suffered a broken orbital bone and might lose her right eye.
