Woman caught under capsized boat in Intracoastal Waterway

61-year-old listed in critical condition

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A woman was listed in critical condition after a 23-foot boat with 14 people on board capsized Sunday near Northeast 87th Street and the Intracoastal Waterway, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.

The 61-year-old woman got caught under the boat, a fire rescue captain said, adding that she went into cardiac arrest while rescuers were trying to save her.

The rescuers pulled the woman from the water and she was taken to North Shore Medical Center, where she’s now listed in critical condition, officials said.

Just after 5:30 p.m., the boat hit a wave, causing it to capsize. The woman was among several people who fell into the water.

Everyone who fell in has been accounted for, officials said. Three teenagers were among the 14 people on the boat.

Good Samaritans helped pull people from the water. The boat’s passengers were not wearing life vests, according to first responders.

The incident remains under investigation.
