18-year-old man accidentally shoots friend on New Year's Eve, police say

Rahsaan Smith arrested on manslaughter charge

CUTLER BAY, Fla. – An 18-year-old man from Cutler Bay is behind bars after police said he accidentally shot his friend on New Year's Eve.

According to an arrest report, the victim and his friend, Rahsaan Smith, were in the victim's bedroom on Southwest 93rd Avenue when the victim pulled out a gun that he recently purchased to show Smith.

Police said the victim removed the loaded magazine from the handgun and handed the weapon to Smith.

Smith confessed to accidentally shooting the victim, the report said.

Police said Smith also admitted to falsely telling responding officers that the victim was shot at another location and that an unknown black male wearing dark clothing was the perpetrator.

Police said Smith also confessed to hiding the handgun under his mattress.

The victim was taken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Jackson South Community Hospital, where he died.

Smith was arrested Sunday on a manslaughter charge.
