POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A 19-year-old was arrested Tuesday in connection to an armed robbery that took place in Pompano Beach last month, the Broward Sheriff's Office reported.
Alexander Jamal Brown is said to have used his mother's sliver BMW in the armed robbery that took place on Dec. 11 in the community pool area of the Captiva Cove apartment complex located in the 1200 block of South Dixie Highway.
The victim told deputies that he was standing by the pool area with a female friend when he noticed a group of males walking passed them, according to a deputy's report.
The victim began speaking to Brown and his friends and when he asked if they live in the community one of the people pilled out a gun an d out to his face, while another grabbed him from behind and put a gun to his neck, the report said. The victim then said that he felt two more guns placed to the side of his body.
When the victim refused to give in to the robbers demands he was pistol whipped and one of the males ripped a gold necklace off his neck, took his cellphone and about $17 from his pockets, the report said.
The victim said that the men got into two different vehicles, one of which was the BMW.
The victim as able to get tag numbers for both vehicles. He was also able to contact a security officer and inform him about the robbery, the report said.
One of the vehicles field the scene before security could catch up and the BMW was spotted trying to go through a gate the victim stood in the road to try to stop the driver, the report said, but the driver didn't stop and struck the victim.
The victim then grabbed the gate so it wouldn't open and the driver of the BMW drove back into the apartment complex where the vehicle would later be found empty and towed away.
Later that day, Margate police assisted in the investigation when they located the owner of the vehicle who told police that she'd allowed her son, Brown, to use the car and that she hadn't heard from him since 11 p.m. the day before.
On Dec. 21, investigators were able to look inside the BMW for evidence. That's when they found two cell phones, a gun, cash and a license with Brown's name on it, the report said.
The victims was bale to identify Brown and another subject, as being the people who robbed him, the report said.
Another witness was able able to identify Brown as well.
Brown was taken into custody on Tuesday on charges of robbery with a firearm.
