Body removed from canal could be suspect who fled from police

Davie Fire Rescue divers pull body from canal

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A body was pulled from a canal early Thursday in northwest Miami-Dade County.

Miami-Dade police are conducting a death investigation after divers retrieved the body from the water.

Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said officers were investigating vehicle burglaries in the area when an officer saw a man run across Honey Hill Drive near Southwest 49th Street.

When police arrived, they saw a man running before he jumped into the canal, which divides Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Rues said officers saw the man in the canal and tried to help him, but he went underwater.

Davie Fire Rescue divers retrieved the body.

Rues said Miramar police detectives are investigating vehicle burglaries in the Vizcaya neighborhood, but it's unclear whether the man who jumped into the canal had been involved in any burglaries.
