Reporter's notebook: Drivers of state-owned Coco Taxi earn more than some Cuban doctors

With the help from tourists' tips, popular Coco Taxi drivers is competitive gig

HAVANA – Drivers of the popular state-owned Coco Taxi in Havana can earn more than some doctors in Cuba. 

Hauling tourists around in the three-wheel moped can earn drivers about $50 a day on a good day, according to a driver. 

A top-earning Cuban specialist can earn $67 a month, according to the Acton Institute. And the official average monthly salary, according to Cuba's National Office of Statistics, was about $25 in 2015.
