Hollywood homeowner shoots at man trying to break into home, police say

Robber flees in black vehicle

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. ā€“ Hollywood police are warning the public about a burglary suspect who is armed and on the loose.

A Hollywood homeowner fired one round at a man who was trying to break into her home Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Police said Thursday that the suspect has been identified as D'aundry Collins.Ā

The incident was reported just before 8:30 a.m. in the 4200 block of Polk Street.

Hollywood police said the victim's doorbell surveillance camera captured a man trying to pry open the front door of the home.

The homeowner fired one round at the burglar, who police said ran away.

"He went around the side and tried to get into a side door," Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said. "He actually tried to punch through the window, I believe, and that is when the homeowner shot toward the suspect, which scared him and he fled."

Neighbors told Local 10 News that they are fed up with break-ins in the area and are glad the woman took a shot at the burglar.

"If you don't belong someplace, you don't belong someplace. You have got to defend yourself," Vincent Carbone said.

Police believe the robber got away in a black vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Impala.

It's unclear whether the robber was struck by the bullet.

Anyone with information about the man's identity is asked to call Hollywood police at 954-967-4411 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
