Woman rescued from elevator at Stephen P. Clark Center

County employee Kelly Castellar spends 4 hours alone in elevator

MIAMI – A woman was rescued from an elevator Monday night at the Stephen P. Clark Center in Miami.

Miami Department of Fire-Rescue crews were dispatched to the government center at about 8 p.m.

Kelly Castellar, a county employee, was riding the elevator when it malfunctioned and stopped between the first and second floors, Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.

"Because the elevator stopped in an area with no access, maintenance personnel, along with an elevator representative, spent two hours trying to get the elevator to work, but (were) unsuccessful,"  Carroll said in an email.

A technical rescue team was able to rescue Castellar by transferring her to another elevator. She was taken to the first floor, evaluated by paramedics and later released.

After spending four hours in the elevator, Castellar joked about her experience with co-workers, hugged her fiancé and expressed her appreciation to the firefighters who came to her rescue, Carroll said.

She even took time to pose for a picture.

The cause of the malfunction is unknown.
