Sgt. Scott Ward spotted a gray Toyota Camry speeding north on U.S. Highway 1 near mile marker 102 and attempted a traffic stop, sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

The driver of the car, later identified as Fernandez, refused to stop, turning off the highway and heading toward the Ocean Reef community, Herrin said.

Fernandez drove through a three-way stop, crashed through the gate and ran two more stop signs before eventually coming to a stop, Herrin said.

Fernandez was handcuffed and taken into custody.

"I saw your lights when you first turned them on," Fernandez told authorities, Herrin said. "I am drunk and I am scared."
