Surveillance video shows driver striking 17-year-old boy in Pompano Beach

$3,000 reward offered for information that leads to arrest

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Surveillance video released Wednesday by the Broward Sheriff's Office shows a driver striking a 17-year-old boy Monday as he was walking to school in Pompano Beach.

The hit-and-run was reported just after 8 a.m. in the 700 block of Southwest Eighth Street.

The video shows an older-model, dark-colored Ford Econoline van clipping Angel Garcia's leg. His head hit the vehicle as he was thrown into the swale.

Deputies said the driver stopped and got out of the van, but returned to his vehicle and took off.

Garcia suffered severe head trauma and a shattered pelvis that needs surgery.

He was transferred out of the ICU on Tuesday and is in stable but guarded condition.

Detectives found a piece of the turning lens from the van at the scene.

Garcia's mother and his 12-year-old brother, Jose, gave emotional pleas Wednesday for the driver to turn himself in.

"I feel really mad at the guy who he did that," Jose Garcia said.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is offered for information that leads to an arrest.
