Employee fatally shot at Chili's in Miami Gardens

Police say victim shot by co-worker's boyfriend

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – An employee was fatally shot Monday afternoon inside a Chili's restaurant in Miami Gardens, police said.

Sky 10 was flying above the Chili's on Northwest Second Avenue near Northwest 199th Street as Miami Gardens police were seen going in and out of the restaurant.

Miami Gardens police spokeswoman Petula Burks said the victim was taken to Aventura Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Burks said Lester Reid, 36, got into an argument with a co-worker. The other employee called her boyfriend, who came to Chili's and shot the victim, Burks said.

The shooter was identified by Burks as Arturo Exum, 31.

Alex Escalada, who works next to the Chili's, told Local 10 News that the victim was shot twice and the gunman got away in a green Mustang.

"I heard everything, (but didn't) really see much because we're a couple doors down, but it was intense," Escalada said.

Chili's was closed for the rest of the day as police interviewed customers and reviewed surveillance video from the restaurant.

"We are shocked and deeply sadden by this tragic situation and the loss of our team members," Chili's said in a statement. "We are doing everything we can do to fully cooperate with police and fire and rescue teams who were so quick to respond."

Police are still searching for Exum.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
