PLANTATION, Fla. – Friends and fellow students brought flowers and said prayers Wednesday afternoon at the location where Annette Ampuro died.
Ampuro, a student at Florida Career College, had just celebrated her 24th birthday when the crash happened near the entrance to a Bank of America on University Drive, near Peters Road in Plantation.
Sky 10 over the scene after witnesses say a pickup driven by an elderly woman, who apparently lost control, T-boned Ampuro's white Kia, crushing it against a tree.
First responders had to extricate the nursing student’s body with the Jaws of Life.
Ampuro’s death has left the entire school stunned and heartbroken.
"It kind of was surreal yesterday until I got home and I saw my own kids and realized she was 24. I could have been her mom. It was just devastating," Elizabeth Najara said.
Paulo Craman calls Ampuro’s death a "big loss."
"Great heart, always supporting. I mean, we have suffered a big loss in the nursing world," Craman said. "The whole school, we are all torn apart by what has happened to her."
Ampuro was in her last semester and was going to graduate as a nurse over the summer.
"She was a young girl full of life and happiness. She had her life ahead of her," Jannell Perez said.
It is unclear if the driver of the pickup will face charges.
A GoFundMe page has been created to collect money for a funeral for Ampuro.
