Boy found wandering in Miami Beach reunited with mother

Unclear if mother will face charges

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Police are investigating after a boy was found wandering in Miami Beach.

Miami Beach police said the boy was found wandering near Sheridan Avenue and 27th Street about 12:15 p.m.

A picture of the boy shared on Twitter showed him shirtless and wearing a red plastic fireman's hat.

Police said the boy was found sitting at the corner of Sheridan Avenue and 27th Street, but was too scared to tell officers where he lived. Ā

His mother contacted authorities a short time later and could be seen talking to police.

Officers took the woman to the police station to be reunited with her son.Ā

"This could very well be an accident," Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said. "Thankfully, the child is OK. The child was located just feet from a main, very busy intersection. The outcome could have been very, very different. It's an important reminder for parents everywhere to ensure they know where their children are at all times."

Police said the boy was only 100 yards from his home when he was found.

Authorities said they are still investigating whether there was any intent by the mother to neglect the child, and it's unclear whether she will face charges.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is also looking into the case.Ā
