Reports: Some sailor remains found on USS McCain

10 sailors had been missing

Some remains of missing Navy sailors were found in a compartment of the USS John McCain, The Associated Press and other news media reported.

A search for 10 sailors had been underway since the USS John S. McCain, a guided-missile destroyer, had collided with an oil tanker off the coast of Singapore early Monday morning.

Divers were sent in Tuesday to search the compartments that had been sealed to stop the ship from flooding. This was amid a search by aircraft around the collision site. The U.S. 7th Fleet said search efforts were being focused on an area east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

Following the collision Monday between the USS John S. McCain and the merchant vessel, Defense Secretary James Mattis said he supported the decision by Adm. John Richardson, chief of naval operations, to conduct a "comprehensive review" of recent U.S. Navy collisions.

The aim would be "to determine any of the causal factors, to determine what's going on -- both immediate contributors to this incident but also any related factors."

Monday's crash marked the fourth time this year that a U.S. warship has been involved in an accident in Asian waters, and it comes barely two months after the USS FItzgerald, also based at the 7th Fleet headquarters in Yokosuka, Japan, was involved in a collision in which seven sailors died.
