DAVIE, Fla. – A woman drove her SUV over a boy on a bicycle earlier this week in Davie as the boy was heading to school, authorities said.
Police said the 9-year-old was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk Wednesday near the Little Rascals Academy in the 6500 block of Southwest 39th Street when he fell off his bike.
Davie police Sgt. Mark Leone said surveillance video shows a woman in a Suburban making a right turn, driving over the bicycle as the boy tried to get up.
Leone said the bicycle and the boy were caught under the SUV and were dragged about 448 feet.
A witness told police that the driver was on the phone when she ran over the boy.
The witness initially thought that the driver saw the boy fall down and believed she was on the phone, calling for help.
But police said she drove away.
Leone said the witness followed the Suburban and notified the driver that a child was stuck under her vehicle once she stopped for traffic on Southwest 39th Street.
A passerby stopped and retrieved a jack to help lift the Suburban off of the boy, Leone said.
Police said the boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
His parents told Local 10 News that their son had no broken bones, but had two teeth knocked out and severe road rash to his shoulder, back and leg.
His leg is in a cast because of the road rash, but his parents say they are grateful that he is alive.
The driver's identity was not immediately released. It's unclear whether she will face charges.
