Men, ages 91, 79 killed by Tri-Rail train in Pompano Beach

Both men died at scene

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Two men died Sunday morning in Pompano Beach when their car was struck by a Tri-Rail train as they were crossing the tracks, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

William Richards, 91, and Richard Leftingwell, 79, were in the 1400 block of West Atlantic Boulevard when the crash occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Richards was driving eastbound on West Atlantic Boulevard in the center lane inside a white four-door 2012 Hyundai when he was struck by the northbound commuter train.

The Tri-Rail train was traveling at 79 mph at the time of the crash, deputies said.

Both men died at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
