PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – More than 50 years after the murder of President John F. Kennedy, thousands of classified documents are being released.
Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood spoke exclusively with a South Florida man who knows the case better than anyone, and who just spoke with President Donald Trump about it.
South Florida resident and political consultant Roger Stone has spent his life researching the Kennedy assassination. He said the document dump is critical and will have major local connections.
"The last 3,100 files, once they are released, there are no more JFK records that we know of," Stone said.
Stone has fought for the release of the documents for decades.
"I had the opportunity to talk to the president last Thursday morning when I was in Fort Lauderdale," Stone said. "I took the opportunity to try to make the case for transparency.
"The president listened quietly. He asked me a few pithy questions. He didn't tell me what he was going to to do."
Now that the president has ordered the release, people are curious to find out what secrets the documents might hold.
"There's a lot of things in here I think will be most interesting -- the CIA's psychological profile of Lee Harvey Oswald, the classified and redacted testimony of both FBI and CIA officials before the U.S. Congress," Stone said.
Stone said the documents will also include some famous Miami figures.
"I think there is a lot of relevance to South Florida," Stone said. "It's amazing how many veterans of the Bay of Pigs fiasco end up on the ground in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963," Stone said.
Stone wrote a book, which contends that the CIA and then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson were part of a conspiracy to kill JFK.
"My concern now is the very same intelligence agencies that oppose this release will take the opportunity to redact, meaning censor, hold back details on the basis of national security," Stone said. "After 50 years, everyone involved in these events has passed away. It's time for the American people to get the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."
