Driver tries to run over North Miami police officers during weekly community bike ride

Officers forced to jump out of vehicle's path, police say

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – A driver tried to run over a group of North Miami police officers Thursday as they were conducting their weekly community bike ride, authorities said.

Police said the officers noticed a suspicious vehicle at the rear of an apartment complex at 12990 NE Sixth Ave. and approached the vehicle as it was stopped.

Authorities said the driver put the vehicle in reverse and then accelerated forward, trying to drive over officers.

Police said the man continued speeding through the driveway, running over one of the officer's bicycles and heading toward the additional group of officers.

Authorities said the officers were forced to jump out of the way to avoid being struck by the car.

Police said the man was in a dark gray or dark blue, four-door Infiniti. They said the driver's side rear door is silver.

Police said a nearby scene that Sky 10 was over Thursday morning was unrelated to this incident.

Anyone with information about the driver's identity is asked to call the North Miami Police Department at 305-891-8111 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. A reward of up to $2,000 is offered for information that leads to an arrest.
