Pregnant woman shot, taken to hospital

Victim taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A pregnant woman was shot Friday morning in northwest Miami-Dade County and taken to a hospital, Miami-Dade police said.

The victim was shot about 5:15 a.m. outside a home on Northwest 49th Street near Northwest 19th Avenue.

"(I) just looked outside to see what was going on and there was already people, like, scattering," one resident who lives in the neighborhood said.

Police found out about the shooting through the Shot Spotter system, a microphone that detects the sound of gunfire in high-crime areas and tells police the location.

"It's not really the best neighborhood, so it's not really too shocking," the neighbor said.

When the sun came up, residents woke up to find their homes in a crime scene.

Roger Dorcin said he had to ask permission to leave.

"I asked him to take my wife to work. He said, 'Let me move the car,'" Dorcin said.

Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said the victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition.

"The gunshot wounds appear to be in the upper extremities and upper torso," Zabaleta said.

Police are investigating to determine who shot the woman.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
