Mayor of San Juan visits Miami to talk about situation in Puerto Rico

Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz receives humanitarian award in Miami

MIAMI – The mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz, is being honored for her continued work and leadership in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. 

She will receive a humanitarian award by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) at a World AIDS Day concert in Bayfront Park Friday night. 

"There are towns that still don't have water, still don't have power, and FEMA has already started pulling back," the mayor told Local 10 News. 

Several months after the storms ravaged the island and half of the population is still without power and parts remains without clean water. As a result, a growing number of Puerto Ricans have left for the U.S. 

An estimated 200,000 people have come to Florida.  

Mayor Yulin Cruz is also being honored for her work with the LGBTQ community in San Juan.
