WILTON MANORS, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy died Thursday after he collapsed during P.E. class at Somerset Academy in Wilton Manors, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said the seventh-grade student was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"Unfortunately, we experienced a tremendous loss today," school principal Anthony Marucci said. "One of our students passed away suddenly. Right now our thoughts and our condolences are with our students, our family, our student's family."
Even at afternoon dismissal, many parents and students were unaware of what had occurred.
"I was just in class and I heard a whole bunch of people saying that somebody had died or got hurt," student Wikins Momeremier said.
Homicide detectives are investigating the death.
School officials sent a note to parents alerting them of the death.
"The Somerset Village family experienced a great loss today. One of our students passed away suddenly today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family. We will be providing counseling to our students and staff, and will hold a memorial service in the near future."
