2 Miramar SWAT team members who went to Parkland school shooting suspended

Police spokeswoman says officers didn't tell supervisors they were going

MIRAMAR, Fla. ā€“ Two South Florida police officers who responded to last month's school shooting from a neighboring city have been temporarily suspended from the SWAT team.

Miramar Police Department spokeswoman Tania Rues said in an email Wednesday that the officers didn't advise supervisors that they were going to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.Ā

The suspension only applies to the SWAT team, so they'll remain on active duty for other assignments.

Miramar's SWAT team had been training in nearby Coral Springs the morning of the Feb. 14 shooting. The team had been placed on standby after reports of an active shooter, but the Broward Sheriff's Office never called for them.

"Let us be clear, the issue was not that they responded, but that they DID NOT advise," Rues said in her email.

Rues said the officers went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after the shooting was over. She said they didn't advise dispatch, their SWAT team leaders or even check-in with the incident command in Parkland.

"This type of response creates numerous safety issues since no one knew the location or activity of these two officers," RuesĀ said.

She said a third SWAT team member wasĀ suspended "for violating the department's social media policy by disseminating information regarding crimes or incidents, thus discrediting the agency and violating the department's code of conduct."
