Sunny Isles Beach high-rise evacuated after small fire

Blaze damaged 12th floor apartment but was contained, officials say

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. – A residential high-rise building in Sunny Isles Beach was briefly evacuated Tuesday after an apartment caught fire on the 12th floor.

Lt. Matt Mandell, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, said the fire broke out just before 3 p.m. inside Winston Towers in the 200 block of 174th Street.

Mandell said more than 20 firefighters were called to the building after smoke was reported inside a hallway.

Crews were able to quickly extinguished the fire, which started in the kitchen, Mandell said. The blaze did not spread beyond the affected unit.

No one was hurt, Mandell said.
