Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot at on Florida's Turnpike

Bullet hit patrol car, but trooper not hurt, FHP says

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was shot at late Tuesday while driving on Florida's Turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade County.

One bullet hit the trooper's patrol car, but the trooper was not hurt, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Camacho said.

The shooting happened about 9 p.m. near Southwest 288th Street.

Camacho said it was unclear whether the trooper was targeted or if the car was hit by a stray bullet. He said the trooper heard about five gunshots and then felt the bullet hit his car.

"We are at the point where officers aren't just concerned about the danger of responding to calls. They are now concerned about being shot at while driving down the road, sitting down and eating at a restaurant or stopping to help someone," Florida Police Benevolent Association president John Rivera said Wednesday morning in a statement. "Officers are targets for simply wearing a uniform. These ambushes and attacks have to stop."
