Florida Department of Corrections officer Tawanna Marin dies

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – A Florida Department of Corrections officer died Monday afternoon in a crash involving a car and a dump truck in Coconut Creek, authorities said.

The Florida Department of Corrections identified the victim as Officer Tawanna Marin.

"For more than nine years, Officer Marin served our state as a corrections officer, and we are forever grateful for her sacrifice and service to our community," Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julie Jones said in a statement. "Our deepest condolences go out to her loved ones and fellow officers during this extremely difficult time."

The crash was in the area of Sample Road and Lyons Road.

According to Margate-Coconut Creek Fire Rescue officials, Marin was overseeing inmates who were cleaning up the grassy area on the side of the road when the driver of a Nissan Maxima crashed into the back of the dump truck. She was trapped in between the car and the dump truck.

Marin had to be extricated and was taken to Broward Health North, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the sedan was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
