FHP says pickup truck struck light pole, rolled over several times

DORAL, Fla. ā€“ One person was killed and four others were injured Thursday morning when a pickup truck crashed into a shallow canal off Florida's Turnpike in Doral.

The crash happened about 8:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike, just south of the Northwest 74th Street exit.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Camacho said a passenger in the truck was killed. Four other people in the truck were taken to a nearby hospital.

"One of them is in critical condition and the other three are stable," Camacho said.

Camacho said the driver lost control, causing the truck to strike a light pole and roll over several times before coming to a rest in the grassy swale.Ā

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Spokeswoman Erika Benitez said crews found a vehicle partially submerged in a drainage ditch.Ā

"There were several Good Samaritans trying to rescue the patients that were still inside the vehicle," Benitez said. "The arriving units quickly doffed their dive gear andĀ started working on extricating one patient who was still trapped in the mangled vehicle."Ā

Crews used hydraulic tools toĀ cut the roof off the truck to get the survivors out, according to Benitez. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue rushed four people to the hospital.Ā ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

"Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reminds everyone to always were your seatbelts and remain alert while driving as accidents can occur in a matter of seconds," Benitez said.Ā
