Man dead after apparent drowning in Miami Beach, police say

Apparent drowning happened at 82nd Street beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A man died after an apparent drowning Saturday afternoon in Miami Beach, police said.

The incident happened at the 82nd Street beach.

Police said Anthony Waiters, 55, of Opa-Locka, was at his girlfriend's family reunion at a nearby pavilion when he was found unconscious.

According to Karron Thomas, Waiters’ girlfriend’s brother, said Waiters was swimming out in the water, but he “swam too far” and was found floating in the water.

Miami Beach police said as Waiters was transported to the hospital, he died.

An official cause of death will be issued once an autopsy is completed, police said.

Waiters friends and family told Local 10 that he was a good man who was generous and cared about the children of the community.
